What to know about the end of the COVID-19 public health emergency
April 13, 2023

This article is for all providers caring for our members

The federal COVID-19 public health emergency will end on May 11, 2023. Here’s what you need to know about our coverage and policies.

Commercial and Medicare Advantage members

Over-the-counter test kits
Starting May 12, we will no longer cover over-the-counter COVID-19 test kits. During the public health emergency, we temporarily covered the cost of up to eight over-the-counter COVID-19 test kits per member, per month for our Commercial members, while the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services covered the same for our Medicare members*.

With the end of the public health emergency, we are returning to our previous policy for over-the-counter purchases.

Diagnostic testing, vaccines, and treatments
We’ll continue to cover:

  • Medically necessary PCR COVID-19 tests ordered or administered by a provider for diagnostic purposes.
  • COVID-19 vaccines and treatment, both inpatient and outpatient, provided by a network provider.

Federal Employee Program members

We are following guidelines from the Blue Cross Blue Shield Association regarding coverage for FEP members. Please refer to fepblue.org for up-to-date benefit information.

COVID-19 information page

We will update our COVID-19 information page for our clinical partners by May 11, 2023 to reflect these changes.
