Reminder: Review your directory information in NPPES
September 13, 2022

This article is for providers caring for our Medicare Advantage members

Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has asked Blue Cross to remind you to review your NPI data in the National Plan & Provider Enumeration System (NPPES) as soon as possible. As you may know, providers are legally required to keep their NPPES data current.

Why do I need to review NPPES data?

When the NPPES is kept up to date, Blue Cross may compare the provider data to the information in our existing directory to verify its accuracy. This also helps provide more reliable information to Medicare members.

Note that we still use Council for Affordable Quality Healthcare (CAQH) ProView®’ as the primary source for professional provider directory information. Please continue to verify and update your practice location information in ProView every 90 days. For group practices and facilities, you are still required to review and update your directory information directly with Blue Cross when requested.

When reviewing your data in NPPES be sure to:

  • Update inaccurate information.
  • Include all addresses where you practice and where a patient can call and make an appointment.
    • Do not include practice addresses where you do not actively practice or see patients.
  • Remove any practice locations that are no longer in use.

Once you update your information, you will need to confirm it is accurate by certifying it in NPPES.
