Sarah Iselin will lead Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts

After a months-long national search, our Board of Directors has chosen Sarah Iselin as our company’s new President and Chief Executive Officer. Iselin will succeed Andrew Dreyfus, who has served as President and CEO since 2010. The change will be effective January 1, 2023, but Iselin will begin working at the company on December 5, 2022. Iselin will be Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts’ first female CEO.

Current CEO Andrew Dreyfus notes that “Sarah is a gifted leader who’s smart, strategic, and passionate about improving health care. She knows our company, our culture, and our values, and I look forward to working with her on an effective transition over the next few months.”

Iselin brings nearly 30 years of experience in health care strategy, policy, finance, and philanthropy and is driven to create a health care system that’s more empathetic, equitable, accessible, and affordable for all.

She is currently executive vice president and chief operating officer at Blue Shield of California, a nonprofit health plan with $23 billion in annual revenue serving 4.7 million members. She also leads the company’s government affairs function.

“It’s a great honor to succeed Andrew and an incredible privilege to lead a company widely recognized as one of the best health plans in the nation," Iselin said. "Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts has a distinguished history of transforming health care and of influencing and inspiring the market and the nation about what is possible. It’s an organization that is mission-driven to its core, with an exceptional leadership team and deeply committed and caring associates. I approach this opportunity with reverence and humility, and gratitude to the Board for its confidence and support.”

Prior to joining Blue Shield of California, Iselin held executive roles in both the private and public sector, including at Guidewell/Florida Blue, Optum, and in Massachusetts state government. She also served in leadership positions at Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts and the Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts Foundation in two different stints starting in 2001 and ending in 2014.

She earned her Master of Science in Health Policy and Management from the Harvard School of Public Health, and a Bachelor of Fine Arts from The School of the Art Institute in Chicago.

Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts Board Chair Dorothy Puhy said, “Sarah is the right person to lead our organization into the future. She’s a seasoned and innovative health care executive who combines a deep understanding of our industry and the Blues system, a passion for making health care simpler and more affordable, and a familiarity with our company and the unique role it plays in Massachusetts health care. The Board is excited to work with Sarah to advance the company’s mission and build on the strong record of achievement and success under Andrew’s leadership.”
