Patients with diabetes need kidney health screenings
July 30, 2024

This article is for primary care providers, endocrinologists, and labs caring for our members

Approximately 90 percent of adults with kidney disease do not know they have it. Because patients may not notice symptoms of kidney disease, an annual evaluation of kidney health in patients with diabetes is critical. This evaluation is also a HEDIS performance measurement.

Kidney Health for Patients with Diabetes (KED)

The American Diabetes Association and National Committee for Quality Assurance recommend screening patients with diabetes for kidney disease every year using both of the following tests:

  • An estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) blood test
  • An albumin‐to‐creatinine ratio (uACR) urine test

These two labs can be completed on the same day.

Ways to improve kidney disease testing

  • Set care gap “alerts” in electronic medical records, then reach out to those who are overdue for their screening.
  • Order laboratory tests ahead of a patient’s appointment.
  • Follow up with patients to educate them on the effects of diabetes, the importance of screening, and the symptoms of new-onset diabetes.

As always, we thank you for the care you provide to your patients—our members.
