The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has released updated versions of two forms that hospitals must deliver to Medicare members receiving inpatient care.

• Important Message from Medicare (IM) to inform patients of their discharge appeal rights.
• Detailed Notice of Discharge (DND) explains the specific reasons for the discharge.

These updated versions streamline the discharge appeal process for Medicare members, ensuring clarity and compliance. 

Key reminders

• Hospitals are required to deliver the IM to all Medicare members who are receiving inpatient care within two days of admission. For patients who may not understand the notice, it must be delivered to their representative.
• The DND is given only if a member requests an appeal and explains the specific reasons for the discharge.
