Crucial kidney health screenings for patients with diabetes
December 9, 2025

This article is for primary care providers, endocrinologists, and labs caring for our members

Many adults with diabetes are unaware of the importance of regular kidney health screenings due to a lack of obvious symptoms until advanced stages of diabetes or kidney disease.

Annual kidney health assessments for patients with diabetes are vital tools for early detection and align with HEDIS performance measures, ensuring consistent and standardized care across health systems.

Key tests

The American Diabetes Association and the National Committee for Quality Assurance recommend two crucial tests that provide a thorough assessment of kidney function.

  • Estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) blood test: Assesses how well the kidneys filter blood, a key indicator of kidney health.

AND

  • Albumin-to-creatinine ratio (uACR) urine test: Detects small amounts of albumin in urine, signaling potential damage.

Both lab tests should ideally be performed on the same day for prompt evaluation. Together, these tests help identify reduced kidney function, even when standard lab panels appear normal.

Ways to enhance kidney disease testing

  • Care gap alerts: Embed alerts in electronic medical records to identify overdue screenings.
  • Proactive test ordering: Pre-order lab tests before annual diabetes visits to streamline processes and prevent delays. Add uACR and eGFR tests to annual diabetes panel orders.
  • Patient education: Discuss the impact of diabetes on kidney health and the importance of regular screenings. Ensure patients understand that full screening includes two tests.  Educate patients on the importance of screening even when they feel well.

As always, we appreciate the care and dedication you provide to your patients—our valued members.
